Assessment Process

Neuropsychological / Neurodevelopmental assessments follow a standard process as outlined below. Further information about fees for the assessment process can be found on our  Fees & Rebates page.

Step 1: Initial clinical interview and information gathering

Depending on the circumstances and age of the child or young person, this may be completed with a parent or guardian. The interview is conducted face to face and typically lasts for 1 - 1.5 hours. At this stage, the current issues and goals for assessment are clarified and a plan for assessment is discussed. To assist with the information gathering process, parent/guardian/s and/or young people may be requested to complete some forms and questionnaires. With permission, schools may also be approached to provide additional information relevant to the assessment.

Step 2: Direct assessment with young person

This may be conducted in a single session (with breaks) or over multiple sessions, depending on the child’s or young person’s needs. The amount of assessment required depends on the goals of the process and tools to be administered. Time taken for assessments can range from 1 to 6 hours in total. You will not be charged for time taken for breaks.

Step 3: Scoring and interpretation of assessment results

This is an integral part of the assessment process that is completed “behind the scenes”. This part of the process does not attract an additional fee.

Step 4: Feedback

To facilitate a shared understanding of the assessment results, a feedback session with parent/guardian/s and/or the young person will be arranged. This will occur approximately 2 weeks after direct assessment has been completed. This provides an opportunity to provide education about the assessment results and to commence problem solving strategies to assist. Depending on the complexity of assessment results,  feedback sessions may run for 0.5 - 1.5 hours. Further sessions to support implementation of strategies discussed can be arranged following the assessment process. Consultation with schools to share assessment information can also be arranged. These additional options for follow up attract an additional fee.

Step 5: Report preparation

A comprehensive written report outlining the assessment goals, results and recommendations will be provided approximately 2 weeks after verbal feedback has been provided. This is a valuable resource that can assist in the understanding of assessment results and strategies to assist and can be shared with other providers, including school. This document also then becomes a lasting record of the assessment results, for future communication and comparison of results, if required. The assessment report attracts a fee and is not an optional part of the process.
